Abstract

The paper discusses the shift to digital service delivery in corrections agencies due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It explores the opportunities, benefits, risks, and drawbacks of this shift. The paper is based on a scoping review of digital developments in corrections.

COVID-19 and Corrective Services
The pandemic posed significant challenges for correctional agencies, both in prisons and community corrections. Strategies were implemented to control the spread of the virus, including restrictions on face-to-face interactions and the adoption of digital platforms for various services.

Aims and Method

The paper aims to review the use of digital service delivery technologies in corrections. It uses a criteria-driven literature search and review process.

Key Issues

Videoconferencing for Remote Supervision: Used for parole, probation, and community corrections.
Tele-mental Health Services: Increased need for medical and psychiatric services led to the rise of telemedicine.
E-learning: The pandemic increased pressure to move to digital delivery modes for education and rehabilitation programs.
Community Corrections
In the community corrections sector, the pandemic led to restrictions on face-to-face contacts and increased the use of videoconferencing and electronic monitoring.

Views on Efficacy

The efficacy of videoconferencing for client supervision has been mixed. While some find it less effective than face-to-face meetings, others note benefits like increased efficiency and reduced travel time for clients.
